Steve, The question is it a carrot or a stick? I tend to see a lot of stick to this deal as it makes Intel perform in a certain way with no regard to the technical merits of Rambus. If they found that other memory tech beat Rambus to death are they forced to support it? No way would they tie their future to a lead brick. This makes me feel that perhaps Rambus might well be made to work after the technical stuff is worked out. It is a hard call as some comments on the register indicate that the 133 bus with latest new Ram on the Athlon has a higher memory bandwidth than a similar rambus/Intel system. I do not fully understand the memory logice and it has been superceded by more current posts so I can no longer point to it.
This may be why Intel wanted to stun Via into inaction as their new chip set threatened to do an end run on their Rambus combo. This also makes me wonder if a Rambus based AThlon system would be a very nighty machine indeed, if a chip set will be made for AThlong with rambus support? I recall reading their will be one??
