Big Bull, hey,

No links come to mind. Parker Drilling is the contractor for one interesting ongoing well which is being drilled for a consortium of 7 operators. The venture is called AKIOC, and the first well spudded a couple of weeks ago.

The rig is a Louisiana swamp barge, as most of the the northern Caspian is very shallow. The barge was cut in half and transported to the Caspian, then re-welded. Then cut apart and re-welded again , without the buckles. Reinforced ice wings were added to deflect pack ice, and the rig was winterized to prepare it for the minus 40 winter temperatures.

Don't know how well this is going to work out...looks like a logistical nightmare, with all of the usual Soviet-style Kazakh bureaucracy at work to help expedite things along. But the structures...we're talking about billion barrel babies.

You may find info on this one by a good online search, otherwise, have a look at Parker's homepage.

Regards,

Aggie
