Mark,
Thanks for the report. Could you tell us which distributors you look at? Also, who dropped the "low price drives and started a new line of drives with similar capacities at higher prices"? And what drives are involved?

Thanks again. This is the week when people try to get rid of any unwanted inventory before the end of the quarter to try to minimize losses. Not surprising to hear about cuts.

s.

Mark -

This is the 1st week in 4 I've seen lower cap prices fall again…
(I'm talking 4.3, 6.4 etc.) Higher caps continue
to decline as usual. A few other points of interest:
1) The scary SEG 28GB barracuda drive has hit the channel.
Remember this product that was announced in the beginning of July? It was going to change the game because it was going to be so much cheaper than the others available… At the time I didn't see any
28GB products available in the channel, but if I projected 5400rpm
price line out it looked like they would be selling for ~$450. And the Barracuda was going to sell for $299, as a 7200rpm drive!! Well,
as usual, it took SEG many months to bring the product to ramp after
intro. It is selling for over that where I can find it. In the meantime the 27GB series 5400rpm drives out there are now just over
$250. Maybe it won't put everybody out of biz. To their credit, this is the biggest 7200rpm drive I can find out there.
2) The price difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives is getting extremely fuzzy. Used to be I could pick a 7200rpm drive out of the list. The QNTM KAs seem to be the cheapest, the WDC Expert are the most expensive.

3) As GM mentioned, I see a lot of really cheap IBM DDs out there. Very strange for them. Some are the original GMR products(like the 16.8),
but others are some of their newer pcs. I've never actually seen
them be the cheapest at certain caps. Don't know what to make of that.
4) BTW GM, I've seen the avg cost per MB <$0.01 since the beginning of Aug. Aug98 = $0.26. Dec97(when I started tracking)=$0.37. FWIW, if you fit a line to the avg price per GB during the last few years, it's pretty linear. It see it currently at around $9.70/GB. It drops at a rate of about 4cents per day... And of course this cannot continue because that would mean DDs would be given away with the PC on Jul 3rd, 2000. Shoot, maybe it's coming to that... (Seriously, the avg price I see now = $9.7(XGB)+$50
