Enough conjecture...

From what I know (not guessing), Apple does have a licensing agreement to produce handheld products running the Palm OS. There is no attempt at making the long-rumored Mac OS Lite or any of that.

Steve did try to buy Handspring.

When he was told No, he instead has kept on close terms with Handspring, insuring Apple Mac OS compatibility, clearly evident with the USB-native interface and Mac OS CD.

But that's only the first step. Look for these two companies to work together quite a bit. The Palm spinoff will likely make the price too high for AAPL to swallow, and Steve can do much of what Palm does already without absorbing another division into Apple. He's a smart guy, and will replicate much of that internally.
