Gateway to stop buying AMD microprocessors - WSJ
Reuters Story - September 20, 1999 04:33
NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Computer maker Gateway Inc plans to stop buying microprocessors from chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. , the Wall Street Journal reported in Monday's online edition.

Citing "people close to the matter," the paper said Gateway, which in February unveiled its first personal computers using AMD chips, will not continue with purchases after its current models are replaced.

The paper said sources told it AMD believes it lost the Gateway business because Intel began offering Gateway more favourable terms than it had previously.

The paper said the move is other sign of rival Intel Corp.'s renewed gains in the price-competitive, consumer PC market.

But the Journal said a Gateway spokesman declined comment other than to say the company continues to sell existing PCs using AMD chips and won't preclude AMD from future bids.
