Your memory is correct. The ad was outrageous. Goldwater didn't deserve it. Johnson was a thug.

Yes it was Goldwater. That campaign was full of irony. Bill Moyers, the kindly and sensitive interviewer of Joseph Campbell and Robert Bly, wrote that vicious ad. More irony is that Goldwater was depicted as a war-monger while Johnson was depicted as a peacenik. If Goldwater had won, we'd have been out of Vietnam by 1966.
