Dan3 ponders the demise of AMD for the first time.

Re: worse case scenario for AMD...

...I don,t bring it up often, but I've said before, that one of the things that I like about AMDs current strategy is that it is a "go for broke" strategy, THAT MAY FAIL

...in failing the company is worth at least its current market valuation if liquidated.

...Getting back to my post, one of the most obvious alternatives for Intel, and what appears to be their current strategy, is to just assume that AMD will fail to produce anything substantial out of Dresden until Q3 or later, at which point Intel will have Willamette...and AMD WILL BE IN LIQUIDATION. THIS MEANS PUSH RAMBUS, forgo some early Coppermine sales, and just ignore Athlon. THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT THIS WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH...

Note: was this posted before or after he know of the announcement that Gateway will drop AMD?

unclewest,

I don't understand how your estimates can be 2 1/2 times MSCO's optimistic estimate ($20 vs $8). Especially when you consider that MSCO was the lead underwriter (weren't they?).

RE: <The latest Intel processors and chipsets provide increased performance and flexibility. In addition, the new HP Kayak PC Workstations offer customers choice in SDRAM or RAMBUS memory technology for heightened computing bandwidth.>

It will be very interesting to learn how HP supports Sdram. If it is with the MTH kludge which hamstrings Sdram by forcing it to use the Rambus interface then this is not much of a choice at all. Of course, any benchmarks between those versions should be ignored (but probably won't be).
