Quake rocks Taiwan; damage to foundries unknown

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan was jolted by a major earthquake today, resulting in structural damage and massive power outages.

The quake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A Taiwanese government source put the quake at 7.3. Major structural damage and at least five deaths were reported in Taipei.

It was not clear immediately how the quake affected Taiwan's major chip foundries. The quake centered in Natou province, about 80 miles south-southeast of Hsinchu, where Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and UMC Group, the world's two largest semiconductor foundries, are located.

“Electricity is reported to be out all over the island,” said a spokesman for TSMC USA in San Jose. “Phone communication has been restored in some places,” he added.

The TSMC spokesman told SBN that “all of TSMC facilities have been stabilized and all employees are safe.” He said TSMC had backup power available but believed it was not yet operating. “We're waiting to see of Science Park [where the Hsinchu foundry is located] comes bac up.”

At UMC's U.S. headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif., less was known about the state of the company's chip facilities. “We haven't heard from anyone there yet,” a spokeswoman said. “UMC has its own power, but you don't know long it would take ot get it going.”
