FairMarket is the beginning of the end.

Yeah, I know +8 1/2 today, but I am thinking longer term. I have been long EBAY for some time now but I just closed my position.

While it was inevitable that smaller auction sites would consolidate to compete with EBAY, this union of major portals looks to me like a serious body blow. User's coming in through a portal will inevitably scan their "local" auction site as well as EBAY. So sellers will have a natural alternative with the volume of buyers they are looking for - no need to consider AMZN vs YHOO.

It will finally net down to the "global auction network" vs EBAY. And the global network will include MSFT, ATHM etc. Watch the big direct sellers start signing up for FairMarket listings now. EBAY should have migrated to this model. They were too insular and have now missed the boat IMO.
