how much time do you think is enough?

So far, I've bought puts with expiration dates in 3/2000, and 1/2001. The 3/2000 puts, if they are under water in December 1999, I'll sell for the tax loss (I have large short-term gains this year). The others I'll hold at least till 6/2000. Do you think I need to go further out than Jan. 2001?
