Samsung to Build Factory for Making 64Mb DRAMs
September 21, 1999 (SEOUL) -- With the global semiconductor market expected to continue its brisk growth, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. said it will build an additional factory to produce 64Mb DRAMs.



The company's new production facilities will be sited in Kyonggi province and will manufacture devices using 8-in. wafers.

A Samsung official said the new facilities will boast a monthly production capacity of 30,000 units of 8-in. wafers, equivalent to 10 million 64Mb DRAMs.

Quakes aside for a moment (damaged machines + insurance = investor apathy ? ... unless it is a tremendous field service drain ... or massive disruption that causes a delay in capacity add's ...):

I find it interesting to see that we have hit our first high-profile 'Underinvestment in a Kinda Fabless Wannabee Case (MOT and the AAPL issues)' ... it could be that it is Just a Yield Thing ... or, that during the penny-pinching in Schaumburg, MOT cut some muscle in Austin in terms of leading edge capacity.

Either way, I would think that the capital budget should at least get a second look.

So, (rhetorical) do you think that MOT will invest a few extra dollars in Dresden and absorb some unused Athlon capacity?
