Shane, the best method is to have floating groups of equipment that can move as one as the floor beneath shifts from side to side. Vertical motion is less of a problem as it is slow enough that it may not bounce the equipment, but does damage buildings.
Japan will have made the stuff as quake proof as they could. The times I stayed in Japan I often felt small tremors while there, the japanese kept walking.
