Jacob, i agree with what you're saying...the S&L crisis has been properly dealt with, while Japan's government has been dragging it's feet over reform for years. it is that fundamental difference that leads me to believe that the U.S. are better prepared to deal with a crisis. honestly, i do not know how deep a correction might be at this time. i would at least expect a 20% correction as you propose as the best case scenario. whether it could get worse than that is something i would be assessing once the correction is underway. note that even a true bear market involving say a 40-50% decline would only take us back to where we were only a few years back. i wouldn't necessarily regard that as a major disaster. only if a decline of that magnitude were to happen very quickly, in crash-like fashion, would i regard the damage to confidence as dangerous. however, this is a highly unlikely outcome. if indeed the market corrects by 20% (or rather, the indices do) we will see how things stand.
i promise i'll let the thread know if i'm buying if and when that happens.
