Mani, Congratulation on your purchase of ATHLON 650MHz PC. One of these days, I'm going to get myself one or two Athlon based systems. Last time I upgraded my systems at home(from AMDF486 to CYRIX MII-PR233) was two years ago. Found this on Yahoo message board (credit goes to FactFirst)Athlon 700, Oct. 4, $832 for OEMs! amdzone.com 700MHz Athlon and Price Cuts On Oct. 4 By Jeff Tom Editor-in-Chief Monday, September 20, 1999 4:13 p.m. CST Coming off today's recent loss of Gateway as an OEM, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, we've received word from sources very close to AMD that October 4 the price wars will rage forth once again when AMD will strike back with a 700MHz version of its very well received Athlon processor, AMD's answer for the high-end market before dominated by Intel's CPUs. Despite rave reviews for AMD's Athlon, its stock performance has lagged behind the speed of Athlon. However, with Intel 100MHz behind Athlon's new clock rate of 700MHz on October 4th, and Coppermine, the PIII core at a .18 micron process and with 256KB on-chip L2 cache that runs at the full speed of the processor, recently delayed until late October, this could be the shot of adrenaline AMD needs. New pricing for Athlon is as follows in 1,000 unit quantities. OEM Athlon 500MHz - $205 Athlon 550MHz - $298 Athlon 600MHz - $459 Athlon 650MHz - $603 Athlon 700MHz - $832 BOXED 500MHz - $219 550MHz - $312 600MHz - $473 650MHz - $617 700MHz - $849 Original prices for Athlon OEM versions were as follows. 500MHz - $249 550MHz - $449 600MHz - $849 650MHz - $849 With these price cuts and superior clock rating, AMD plans to offer a superior product at a pricing structure equivalent or less than Intel's PIII. AMD should also announce a 750MHz version of Athlon this quarter. AMD is also set to announce new price cuts on their K6-2 and K6-III products, covering their low-end and and mid-range CPUs, which pricing we should have at a later time. AMD may finally announce their 500MHz version of the K6-III after many incorrect reports of its launch during the past few months. With these new price cuts of their CPUs, AMD is ready to continue competing against Intel's Celeron and PIII products. Goutama PS: Based on the comments I heard on CNBC, I don't think the Gateway's decision to stop using AMD's low end processors is final. May be the pending announcement of cuts on K6-2 and K6-III is to appease Gateway.
