DS, The Loma Prieta quake, 1989, epicenter was a little over 20 miles south of the heart of Silicon Valley. The Taiwan one, as I've heard on the news, was 90 miles south of major industrial areas. Being so heavily populated, though, who knows. Loma Prieta was a 7.1, vs., 7.6 in Taiwan. Silicon Valley is still here. Also, sometimes, the Richter scale rating is stated the next day, usually less. We'll see.
