<Seriously, though, if you consider the things that matter during travel, such as laptops and electric shavers, you'll find that they're quite usable worldwide, what with auto voltage switching and all. >

Although that certainly wasn't always the case as you know, you're still bolstering my arguement... if you're willing to buy a 'convertible' phone for a little extra [ie. cords and gadgets] there is no reason change the whole system in Europe or here... buy a phone that will work on both standards... or freakin rent one when you get there. The car rental will rent you a cell phone for heavens sakes. Heck, just because you can get off the plane in Paris with your own phone doesn't mean your not going to pay prices that would nearly rival renting one!!

My point is I just don't believe that this European/American traveler business is going to force anyone to adopt any standards... if CDMA is SUBSTANTIALLY more efficient allowing more voice OR data use for the same investment or the same infrastructure, in will replace TDMA... if the efficiencies are marginal, it will be used in all the new systems [which it appears is being born out], but may take a long long time to replace existing TDMA systems depending apon costs of upgrading, or adding capacity to those systems... both of which I am not qualified to address.
