That was a big relief. Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, etc. are all granting new GSM licenses. The new operators will be making the decision on where to order the network equipment very shortly. Nokia probably needs to land at least one third of the new orders to keep the mobile network market share expansion going. I think there was only one percentage point between Nokia and Lucent in 1998 in mobile network market share list.

Nokia's Chinese network sales have nearly pulled even with Ericsson this year - even though Ericy outsold Nokia 2:1 there in 1998. That's probably enough to boost Nokia ahead of Lucent to become number three globally. So with more success in Europe Nokia could make a move on Motorola's number two position next year. That's the place to be when the mobile data and 3Q equipment sales take off in earnest.

Mika: Curious. Since CDMA is not permitted in Europe - completely locked out - why is it news that GSM won a license? Chaz
