MDF: All those wires distributed along the streets converge into a single point when they reach the Central Office: The MDF.

They are terminated at blocks with surge arresters so that if a lightning or any power surge reach the cable the don't fry the switch card.

The MDF consists of a iron skeleton with horizontal blocks at one side and vertical blocks at the other. The dial tone are terminated at the Horizontal blocks. The cables -which gives the name of this Thread- are terminated at the Vertical side.

So that everytime you need dial tone one guy crossconnect -with a jumper wire- the dial tone H block to the cable V block.

I started my "Last Miler" career jumpering the MDF -from Vertical block to horizontal block- to support myself and going to school at night.

The MDF will become obsolete and cease to exist once all lines reach the CO over GR 303 or any other flavor of IDLC connection.

I hope one of them will be kept -kind of museum- intact to show the kids how the Last Milers did their stuff.
