interestingly, the iomega support bulletin said:

If the parallel port mode is set to ECP, unidirectional or Auto change the setting to another mode.

which at first glance appears to be exactly opposite from what worked for you, but "upon further review" <g3> could be read as an indication that the parallel port mode setting may need to be switched around.
