Motorola and Audible Pioneer Internet Delivery of Spoken Audio Content to Integrated Digital Wireless Phones
PCS '99 Showcase Demonstrates Convenience of Downloading Popular Audio Books, Magazine and Newspaper Digests to iDEN(R) Handsets
NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1999-- Motorola, a global leader in wireless communications, and Audible, a leading provider of Internet-delivered spoken audio content, are holding the first-ever demonstration of premium spoken audio content delivery, downloaded directly to digital wireless phones at the Personal Communications Showcase (PCS '99) in the Motorola booth (No.2822, Hall C), September 22-24 in New Orleans. The exhibit demonstrates the ability for the Motorola i1000plus(TM) integrated digital handset, with hands-free speakerphone, to download and play a selection of best-selling spoken media, such as audio books, magazine and newspaper digests, business and investing news and analysis, lectures, language lessons and on-demand radio from Audible.com.

The concept showcase demonstrates unprecedented functionality to allow users to download popular media from the Internet so it can be played to them through Motorola's IP-enabled plus series handsets. Users who could benefit from this application are the estimated 84 million people who drive alone to work each day, the 40 million mobile workers who spend 20 percent of their time away from the office, the 50 million people who exercise regularly, and other consumers who are seeking enrichment when their eyes are busy but their minds are free.(a)

``This demonstration of Audible's innovative spoken audio content delivered wirelessly to i1000plus handsets illustrates Motorola's continuing commitment to bringing advanced, integrated solutions to our customers,' said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager of the iDEN Subscriber Group's U.S. Markets Division. ``The ability to extend the Internet to our integrated digital wireless phones can bring unprecedented solutions for end users and enhances the value proposition for wireless network operators.'

``We are delighted to be working with Motorola, a world leader in the development of wireless technology, to demonstrate the future potential of delivering rich and personalized selections of Audible content directly to these integrated wireless phones,' said Andy Huffman, president and CEO of Audible, Inc. ``As Internet-enabled wireless phones proliferate and become Audible-ready(TM), our award-winning Internet audio service will be available to a much larger audience.'

Using the iDEN technology's unique IP-based packet data capabilities, users could download customized content from the Audible.com Internet audio service using the phone's microbrowser. Audio can then be played back over the handset's hands-free speakerphone at a convenient time, such as while the user is traveling. Once audio content is downloaded to the handset, it can be stored for playback throughout the day.

Visitors to the demonstration will be able to choose from a special selection of Audible.com content for downloading and listening on the i1000plus handset, including excerpts from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, The Testament by John Grisham, Garrison Keillor's News from Lake Wobegon, as well as Car Talk radio programs.
