cdaisey,

<< Everybody I know has a cell phone and nobody is complaining about battery life >>

I used to only complain a little. Now I whine a lot. My Qualcomm QCP800 (BAM) used to sit (still usually does) in a cradle in my car plugged into a well dressed in hands free kit charging from the lighter socket. Worked fine on my old GM auto but my new Chrysler product has a kill switch that kills all power after about an hour. If I leave the phone power on parked overnight the SOB is severely discharged when I next use the car.

If I travel domestically by air and am out more than 2 days I need to lug the charger (small but just one more gizmo to pack) or spare battery (same).

When I travel overseas (generally short trips of 3 to 5 days) its the same story with my Bosch "Worldphone" (Omnipoint), lug the charger (small but just one more gizmo to pack)...

All our needs and mobile usage vary but I'm into (much) longer battery life (particularly in the stand by mode) and it will be a serious consideration in the next mobile I buy. Most business travelers are in the same mode - smaller, lighter, longer, less (gizmos to pack).
