The growth in the deficit in July was unexpected. Many analysts had been forecasting a slight narrowing after a string of record monthly highs.

The politically sensitive deficits with Japan climbed 8 percent in July to a record high of $6.8 billion, while the gap with China rose an even larger 11.4 percent to a record $6.3 billion."
