Ah, but most materialists are closet mystics. I have seen people arguing for evolution on these threads who do not seem to grasp that without a metaphysical underpinning permitting a teleological interpretation, one is in no position to read "progress" into evolution, and there is no reason to think that whatever species may supercede us will be what we would recognize as superior. I have seen people who laugh at religious belief who are convinced of our eventual inclusion in an interplanetary civilization of aliens who are god- like. I know atheists who practice wicca, because they rationalize it with Jungian psychology, and atheists who have a pagan notion of Nature, as if it were a quasi- intelligent organism, instead of "atoms and the void". There is no reason for you to be shy.....
