Don't forget that first of all, there is a tax liability hidden in these holdings. Of course, the way Seagate has been going, they may have enough write offs over the next few years to minimize that liability<g>. But second, they can't just go out sell all of their holdings, it would wreck the market in the underlying stock, and they have already said that they don't want to do that.

They won't just "give" the stock to their shareholders. They need to money too much. From what I can see, they are falling further and further behind on the desktop. No announced 9 gig drives yet, much less the 10 gigs that both Maxtor and Quantum will have in volume production next month. More and more, it looks to me like they would be better off if they buy Maxtor. They fixed their problems 10 years ago by buying Imprimis, they could do the same now with Maxtor, IMO. They could afford it. We'll see if their board agrees.
