Actually, I'm talking about the competition between mobile phones and PDA's to become the favored wireless internet access device. And here Palm Pilot and other PDA's seem to be on shaky ground. All PDA sales in the world in 2000 will be only a fraction of the sales of mobile phones equipped with mobile data features. Palm Pilot has failed to break through in Europe and Asia. It's possible that PDA's as a product group will hit the same growth brick wall pagers are hitting just now.

I don't think Bluetooth aims at anything as narrow as "beaming" between wireless devices. It could become a way to keep mobile phones in synch with devices like printers, fax machines and PC's within 20 feet radius - with no direct line of sight required. So it's like a core technology for a miniature LAN.
