AFIS (the field) is what I just got out of as a programmer.

As good as it sounds, it would be likely to be somewhat slow and expensive for the company in question if applied with todays hardware.

For example: I worked on the registration system of fingerprints for an entire country. To achieve this and have some speed, we used a 100 GB RAM Database (note I said RAM). RAM in that sort of quantity is quite expensive.

Then to get a good match/key I would want more than one fingerprint to be used. With 3 you could get a hit probably faster.

Another thing to consider is the matching technology / algorithm. If its a good one, it will be difficult to 'fake'. Even the best ones (like www.cogentsystems.com [i have seen their source code and am under an NDA] ) still have a degree of uncertainty.

I'm not against AFIS, but in this case, I wouldn't want to put up my fingerprints against everyone's in the world as the accessor to my private data.
