Mike Doyle, I agree with you about Vod/Bam jv. I think this is very significant and the nation wide foot print and quality of cdma service should put huge pressure on T. I also agree that it will cause Sprint to either expand coverage more rapidly or find its on partner.

TechnoPoohbah, you are correct that the 2nd national footprint added by the combination of BAM/Airtouch/GTE is very significant. Remember, they still have large numbers of analogue subs that have yet to switch. Giving them another non-T national choice is very important.

While we're on today's significant announcements, how about nextwave coming up with all those investor bucks? The judge obviously thinks FCC are a bunch of bozo's and congress is getting set to rummage in Kennard's undies. Can you say 3rd national footprint (and likely cdma2000 from the git-go)?

And to top it all off it seems to have escaped everyone that our own little ole LWIN just ordered the first domestic cdma2000 system from the evil empire itself!!!

Who cares about the squiggles. These are important events.

Best regards,
Jim

JMD: Are the footprints of the three significantly overlapped? If not, all you get is the same coverage capacity in a given area. The build out will not be increased just because we now have a huge entity trying to manage growth all over the US.

If the coverage in an area is overlapped, you can get some increased capacity and thus less dropped calls, but you are not going to be able to reallocate much currently installed infrastructure. Base stations and tower capacity do not lend themselves to being pulled up and moved over a mile or two to fill a hole in coverage.

I think three competitors all vying for market share is better for total CDMA sells than one big concern who has to spread the available money and time over the entire US. Sure VODABAM will put out some big contracts, but the dollar value will be less than GTE,VODA, BAM and Prime Co. would have done on their own.

I would rather see five people in a pie eating contest, rather than three.

Disclaimer: Being at the Space Center, we tend to be a bit of a backwater compared to you go-go California types. We do not enjoy the fruits of multiple companies fighting over us and we will not be at the top of the buildout/upgrade list of a combined VODABAM.
