<<I don't know if anyone noticed, but on Yahoo, there was a post on a Prudential visit to DSS, where
Pru (I think it was Kim Alexis?) said that DSS wouldn't be sure about meeting revenue projections for the
quarter until the last couple of weeks. While media sales were strong, systems sales were a little weaker than
expected. Apparently, they also said that volume shipments of SDLT wouldn't begin until mid '00, claiming
that that was "on schedule". I always thought that volume shipments were supposed to begin in CYQ1 of '00.>>
I've been hearing at least 1st qtr of 2000, if not mid-year. This is serious slippage from the original schedule of mid-99. Already, almost as bad as that which cost Exabyte the market. The fact that it looks like M2 and LTO outperform SDLT doesn't help, esp with M2's huge cost advantage. My feeling is that Quantum's management has not always been forthright regarding problems, especially with DLT. One other negative is that I hear Ecrix's $1,000 drive may perform comparably to DLT8000 in the real world due to DLT's serios backhitching problem (which should also plague LTO). In sum, I am rather negative on DSS's outlook. -Z
