Digging ditches versus what I called a
carnival ride--not really the same idea.
You don't have to have a purpose or find
meaning in life to enjoy it.
Maybe I'm a hedonist?

But hard work with little meaning is okay
too--its' been a long time since I had to
do physical labor for a paycheck, but
that dead dog tired feeling followed by
a good night's sleep was pretty sweet.
Not that I'd want to be a laborer as I
get older...you do that when you're 17
and bounce back easier.

Now back to your story--sure, having a goal
or doing good could probably add a lot of
meaning to an empty life. I suppose a good
thing for depressed people to do would be
to volunteer their time helping those who
are less fortunate--a lot of satisfaction
in that sort of thing.

I think that is what older folks do when they
retire--volunteer their time, and excellent way
to add meaning to life. For example, it would be
fun to help kids learn to read when I'm an old
grey fart.

So maybe the meaning of life is to try and stay
happy, be nice to the people around you--one of
the useful commandments--and do a little good while
you try and have a good time. Enough said, see ya!
