Tenchu, The law of unintended consequences at work again. I am sure AMD wanted to keep the Athlon under wraps, so they released early version, knowing Intel would get a look at them and say, " no worries here, back to sleep", but that same conclusion would act to chill the mobo makers and want them insist on seeing fast working parts before they comitted to a development program.
If they had released full fledged parts too early Intel would have had more time to prepare, and may have the Rambus alternate further along than the current late state.
