Drew, Gateway Plans Expansion In Brazil Through Strategic Alliance With Vitech Business Editors SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1999--Gateway, Inc. (NYSE:GTW) today announced that it will greatly expand its presence in the Brazilian PC market through a strategic alliance with Vitech America, Inc. (Nasdaq:VTCH), one of Brazil's largest manufacturers and direct sellers of PCs, business systems integration and networking equipment. The move is consistent with Gateway's strategy to accelerate its global expansion. "Creating a significant brand presence in Brazil is a critical step in Gateway's ongoing globalization," said Ted Waitt, Gateway chairman and chief executive officer. "Linking with Vitech, one of the country's most prominent technology players, gives us instant and efficient access to Brazil's growing technology customer base and fits well within our international expansion strategy of reasoned investment in high-potential markets." "The Gateway/Vitech strategic alliance leverages Gateway's tremendous global brand recognition, offering Brazilian customers a compelling source for PC-based technology solutions," said George St. Laurent, chairman and CEO of Vitech. "As one of the world's most innovative leaders in technology, Gateway will put technology convergence in the forefront of the minds of Brazilian IT customers." The alliance calls for a financial relationship between Gateway and Vitech and gives Vitech rights to enter into broad licensing and distribution agreements to produce, market and service Gateway-branded products for Brazilian businesses and consumers, using Vitech's existing manufacturing facilities and well-established channels of distribution. With the licensing and distribution agreements, Gateway would also transfer its technological know-how and state-of-the-art manufacturing and assembly techniques to Vitech to ensure that Gateway's products in Brazil meet the company's worldwide quality standards. Finally, the agreements also give Gateway the option to acquire Vitech at some point in the future, based on a formula tied to financial performance. As the world's twelfth largest PC market and the largest country in South America, Brazil represents a major growth opportunity for Gateway, which previously had almost no presence in Brazil. While Gateway and Vitech have joined together in the past to offer Gateway's ALR servers to Brazilian businesses, this new agreement marks a major expansion of the relationship by broadening Vitech's available product offerings to Gateway consumer and business desktops, portables and any other systems and hardware Gateway plans for the future.
