Ameritech is a CDMA system. Their CDMA system in Chicago is quite poor when compared to that of rival CDMA vendor PrimeCo, which is owned already by BAM/Airtouch/VOD.

I have to agree with Jim Frost---such wonderful news out today for Q. The nationwide CDMA footprint afforded BAM/VOD will accelerate all things CDMA, be they handsets, ASICs, base stations, ASICs, data, different ASICs, and royalties(of course). The two CDMA systems(Sprint, VodaBAM)will now compete to offer the best coverage and best services. That means accelerated buildouts for digital voice service coupled with data rollouts earlier than initially thought. Will VodaBAM allow Sprint to be the only data provider? Not likely. If they both have data, who will have FASTER data? I bet they race to one up the other. Could we see IS-95B out of one or the other in the near future? An upgrade is quite simple really. That's the beauty of CDMA, and the beauty of competition. This blather you may see about GSM data is just that. With one fell swoop, CDMA data will put GSM data to shame. It has already started. The talk of GSM data at 38K being such a major accomplishment is so out of whack with reality. Higher speeds are here, and they are not GSM.

Also today was the pledge of economic support for Nextwave, which is chomping at the bit to provide higher speed data via a CDMA system. In addition, LWIN announces $660 million in buildout, including cdma2000 installation. Draw your roadmaps for all these exciting developments and the one poised to benefit most is one company with the symbol QCOM.
