So, let's take a look at the business model. Yahoo's message boards are supported by ads, which people have generally branded as "intrusive." SI's model is subscription-based (whether it be one-time or now, recurring). Every business has to have SOME means of generating revenue. Clearly, the perceived value of interacting with others who are intelligent is not large - hence, the lack of participation and membership growth on SI. Most seem not to be willing to pay to partake in those types of discussions - thus the growth of Yahoo's message boards.

It's funny because it goes against several of the mantras that Net companies, especially AOL, state about the Web: content is the differentiator and that the majority of Web participants are brand buyers, with a small minority being in the value (cost-conscious) segment.

Anyway, I do value interacting with people like Trader Dave who do fundamental research and have thought through their conclusions. Are there any other non-stock boards on the Web where we could find a new home? I know there are all sorts of forums for the Java community. Any for CRM or other tech areas?
