I think another reason is the number of companies that they've added with no current or future earnings. Internets, fiber optic and telecom service stocks, etc. By the time many of these companies are projected to start making money by 2002-2005, there'll probably be too much capacity. They're all trying to offer long distance, local phone, and other commodity services. I noticed a large number of them in the Yahoo! Finance industry section for Utility - Telephone, whereas they were previously in the Telecom - Services industry group.
