No I volunteered before 18 and only got a week of Camp Forest in Tullahoma before rejection as 4-f because of a hip bone defect. I shouldn't have been turned down because I could have served in many things other than marches.

Yep I really did enjoy the big city and glamor then. I was a Christian youth and never experienced anything like that. I was embarrassed to tears when the date invited me to sleep over and couldn't get back in the cab fast enough. I know it sounds unbelievable but naive doesn't describe me at that time.

I started work in my teens and was promoted to traveling salesman in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama for a Glen Cove Long Island Company and given a paid trip to New York with unlimited expense account. Coming from a poor family background the glamor and size of the big city was overwhelming.

We had rationing during the war and every American was aware of the war and all willing to sacrifice for the boys in the service. Since then our wars have been considered by the majority as just another event we wish someone else would stop. Patriotism was a big thing in the early 40's. I am convinced I lived in some of the best times in my youth and people, cities, states and America have gone downhill since the late 50"s. Everything has gotten bigger but hardly better. Back then you didn't lock doors and slept with open windows. Now many people put bars on windows and doors, have burglar alarms and have hand guns for protection. We have gone from a poor loving caring people to a bunch of fearful, greedy animals.
