Initial Inspection Shows no Fab Damage After Earthquake.

First of all, we are thankful to report that the earthquake in Taiwan caused no injuries to UMC Group employees. Also, based on initial inspections, there is no apparent damage to the fab buildings or machinery, except for some glass (e.g., quartz furnace tubes) breakage, and a few ceiling tiles. All process gas, water, air handling, and power lines appear to be fully intact. Our back-up power systems kicked on as intended in response to the disruption. The back-up power is primarily intended for safety systems and some critical manufacturing equipment, and thus alone is insufficient to fully test all fab equipment for functionality. UMC Group worked with a local power company in Hsinchu to restore partial power to some of the fab facilities. This is expediting the process for fab engineers and technicians to ascertain the status of the fab process equipment and effects to customer work in progress. Restoration of the main power to the Science Park and the UMC Group Fabs is expected as early as Wednesday in Taiwan. We expect to have completely tallied any impact to customer work in progress within 24 hours of full power restoration, as well as estimated the loss of total production time.
