For decades, the island of Penang on the Northwest coast of Malaysia has served its country and the high tech world well as Malaysia's form of a Silicon Valley. The historical port city of Georgetown on Penang was over 800K strong when I was there in the early 80s now its well over 1 million and growing. It is hardly an over statement to say every electronics firm you have ever heard of currently has a factory on Penang.

The Stratfor article seems to imply that the high tech corridor south of KL is Malaysia's last best bid for a role in high tech. This is obviously not true. Its just the next expansion phase.

It would be good to hear from Stitch who currently lives in or near KL to get a "local flavor" on this Stratfor article.
