NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Gains by European telecoms and BP Amoco (NYSE:BPA - news) (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BPA.L) ADRs, or American Depositary Receipts, on Thursday nudged the Bank of New York ADR index higher even as the Dow Jones Industrial Average continued to slip.

The Bank of New York index of ADRs gained 0.22 percent to 128.89 while the Dow fell 50 points.

``OPEC out there is good for oils and this whole consolidation in the telecoms industry is happening so quickly that people's heads are spinning. To the extent Vodafone Airtouch can bring the U.S. new technology to building cellular networks, it has the potential to be huge,' said Val Kosmider, referring to Vodafone's recent deal with Bell Atlantic Corp. (NYSE:BEL - news).

Oil prices continued to strengthen after OPEC decided to stand firm on supply cuts that have doubled prices this year. BP Amoco's ADRs rose 2-1/4 to 110-1/2.

Vodafone (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L) (NYSE:VOD - news) ADRs jumped 11-7/16 to 231-1/2. British Telecommunications (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BT.L) (NYSE:BTY - news) ADRs rose 5 to 157-1/2.

France Telecom (NYSE:FTE - news) ADRs rose 1-3/4 to 83-1/2 after news that German conglomerate Mannesmann AG (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: MMNG.F) was splitting into separate units sparked rumors of a link between the two firms.

Automaker Volvo AB (Nasdaq:VOLVY - news) ADRs gained 13/16 to 28-7/8 amid renewed rumors of a possible bid from Germany's Volkswagen AG (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOWG.F).
