Man emerges from attic after 57 years hiding from Nazis, Soviets
KIEV, Sept 21 (AFP) - A 75-year-old man from the Khmelnitsky region in western Ukraine emerged from his attic last week after hiding there for 57 years to escape Nazi and Soviet troops, reported the newspaper Dien (The Day).
Stepan Kovaltchuk hid in his attic in 1942 during the Nazi occupation of Ukraine to avoid being sent to Germany as forced labor.

After the victory of Soviet troops, he kept hiding by fear of being drafted in the Red Army, added Dien.

Kovaltchuk emerged distraught into the streets of his village of Montchintsi, also in the Khmelnitsky region on September 18, 10 days after his sister's death.

According to a local official quoted by Dien, he is in good health.

The western regions of Ukraine belonged to Poland up to 1939, when they became part of the Soviet Union under the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

For many years, these regions resisted Communist rule.
