(Photo: newscom.com n/prnh/19990528/SFF034 ) The new sales and marketing program provides an easy, end-to-end solution for Dell customers who want high-speed cable Internet access and simplifies the broadband ordering process. The deal marks the first time the @Home service can be ordered through a PC manufacturer. This model is expected to drive deployment of the service, and ultimately, subscriber growth while reducing the time and cost associated with customer order processing. "You can now get your PC and @Home broadband access from a single source. Excite@Home and Dell are the first to make this happen," said Tom Jermoluk, CEO and Chairman, Excite@Home. "The @Home service is a perfect Internet solution for the Dell customer -- a savvy user who demands the most out of their Internet experience." "Providing our customers with a high-speed Internet service is one of Dell's biggest priorities as we near the millennium," said Janet Mountain, vice president and general manager of Dell's consumer business. "High-speed Internet access changes everything. Telecommuting, real-time video news feeds and the ability to purchase music, services, software and information over the Internet will soon become standard practices as high-speed Internet access enters more homes. That's why Dell is working closely with industry leaders like Excite@Home to make high-speed Internet access easy and affordable." Getting Broadband With Dell Beginning Thursday, the 23rd, the two companies will offer a program where consumers can order Dell computers and the @Home broadband services with a single phone call. Dell customers can order their computer and check for availability of the @Home service by calling 800-274-4635. Customers living in an area serviced by one of Excite@Home's cable partners, will be able to place an order for the @Home high-speed cable Internet service directly from a Dell customer service representative. The local cable operator will follow-up with the new @Home customer to confirm their order and schedule an installation appointment. The @Home high-speed cable Internet service is currently available in more than 89 markets nationwide. By subscribing to @Home, Dell customers will be able to download information at speeds up to 100 times faster than using regular 56K analog modems over telephone lines. The @Home service is available in major markets including San Diego, Dallas, Nashville, Philadelphia, and central New Jersey. More than 10 million potential customers living in AT&T, Bresnan, Century, Charter, Comcast, Midco and Suburban cable markets will be able to sign up for @Home through Dell. Additional Excite@Home cable partners are expected to join this program shortly. Demand for high-speed Internet access has gained significant momentum in the last year as PC users look for faster ways to download large files and access multimedia files over the Internet. A recent survey by Dell shows that nearly half of all home PC users cite high-speed Internet access as the No. 1 desired feature in their millennium home.
