Question for the thread (don't be shy!): Over the next couple of years, for what applications will DRDRAM help performance materially?

KZ just mentioned scanning in 100M sized photos, but my impression (based on my 133Mhz machine and 30-bit scanner :o)) is that the scanning bottleneck is still in the processor and the scanner, not the memory bus. At what speed processor (scanner or CPU) does scanning get held up by the RAM? Any guesses?

KZ also mentioned video streaming. But, the most attractive prospect for video streaming is off the web. And the web continues to be constrained by its slowest step, and currently runs at about 400kbps. Maybe 600kbps. So, all of our PC's are fast enough to handle anything coming off the web. That's going to change, but how fast? And what configurations will be needed to get that extra performance?

Please offer applications that will see a demonstrable improvement from memory bus improvements in the near future.

Thanks and best regards to all respondents.

Sure, Dave, sure. All these future apps are just waiting to spring forth and liberate computer users who had the vision to pay $500 extra for a PC with Rambus. The truth is that most of these apps will run faster with PC133, CL2 and they will run faster yet with VC Dram.

But I'm sure that Intel will be able to contrive some software somehow for which Rambus will be a little faster.

However the biggest source of baloney on Monday will not be the choice of the benchmark (the Bogus benchmark issue) but rather the Contrived comparison by which Intel will take a system with the fastest Rdram that anyone can make with their latest chip set and compare it to ???? What will it be? A system with the old chip set with hohum PC100 sdrams? A system with the new chip set but an MTH kludge? A proper comparison would be against a modern chip set with PC133, CL2 sdrams.

Of course maybe VIA will provide us with that comparison! If Intel doesn't get a court order to prevent it.
