OT slightly. Am I imagining things, or did the tech market just take a sudden turn for the better. 45 min ago everything was red by fractions, now its all green in whole numbers.

Kent,

<< I look forward to your insult! >>

The article you linked for Jim (that I was about to) is of course located on Intel's GSM Data sight (Boo, Hiss!). Despite the source I think it is one of the best current, concise, and unbiased articles on the subject I have seen. I would like others viewpoints on this.

There is another very good recent related PDF publication from the Yankee Group that is a bit more dificult to access but I've posted instructions on getting to it at:

Konka Group to Employ Lucent GSM Platform
9/22/99 Shezhen, China-based Konka Group Co., LTD has formed a relationship
with Murray Hill, NJ-based Lucent Technologies Inc. that will propel Konka into
the Chinese handset market. Under the five-year pact, Konka has agreed to
employ Lucent's GSM development platform during the design of cellular phones
for China's GSM market.

Unveiled in November, Lucent's platform, which is only slightly larger than a
business card, is targeted at GSM handset designs. Using this platform,
engineers can develop wireless handsets that offer a small footprint and feature
up to 500-hour standby times.

Designed for 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz operation, the new platform includes the
SC1688 chip, which combines Lucent's DSP1628 digital signal processor (DSP)
and CSP1089 conversion signal processor. In single-band systems, the new
platform also houses the CPP48010 microcontroller chip and the W2020 RF chip.
In dual-band approaches, the W2020 is replaced by the W3020 and W3000 RF
chips.

To ease compliance, Lucent provides all physical layer and protocol stack
software with the new platform. Lucent also includes Optimay's software in the
platform. This software controls a GSM phone's call processing and user
interface functions.

Konka, known for its TV products, plans to make available handsets equipped
with Lucent's technology platform in China in October 1999. Konka will target
Europe as the second market for cell phones, and plans to make them available
by 2001.
