LSI Logic Demonstrates Leadership in Storage Technology at Nikkei Conference

Exhibit Will Include Newest Product Offerings in Ultra3 SCSI and Fibre Channel

Applications

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI), The System on a Chip Company(R), will be demonstrating its newest storage components in Ultra3 SCSI and Fibre Channel applications at the Nikkei Electronics Conference in Tokyo, Japan, September 27 and 28, 1999.

"SCSI and Fibre Channel are very complementary, and our customers are committed to several generations of storage products based on both of these technologies," said Harry Mason, director of strategic alliances, LSI Logic Storage Components Division. "Not only are we enabling the industry to deliver best-in-class storage performance, but we are also leading the market with unsurpassed availability and manageability features, which are increasingly critical to everything from web servers to enterprise-class SANs."

The Nikkei Conference is organized by Nikkei Electronics and ENDL, and is sponsored by the SCSI Trade Association (STA) and Fibre Channel Solutions. The show targets major OEMs in Japan. The ENDL/Nikkei Conference brings together the experts who are creating the standards, and developing the technology of the next century.

About LSI Logic's Ultra3 SCSI Technology

At the heart of LSI Logic's Ultra3 SCSI portfolio is the SYM53C1010 PCI-Dual Channel controller, which is 100 percent compatible with the Ultra 160/m SCSI initiative and provides additional features that ensure robust Ultra3 system operation. For complete end-to-end protection of the SCSI I/O, Asynchronous Information Protection (AIP) safeguards all non-data phases and augments the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) feature of Ultra 160/m. LSI Logic's exclusive SureLINK(TM) domain validation technology goes beyond the Ultra 160/m initiative by providing a Margined Integrity Checking feature (Level 3 domain validation), which is integral to the SureLINK implementation. SureLINK technology enhances system availability and manageability when provided in conjunction with LSI Logic's proven LVDlink(TM) signaling capability. In order to improve the customer's time-to-market and support LSI Logic's installed customer base, the SYM53C1010 is designed to be both pin and software compatible with LSI Logic's industry leading SYM53C896 Ultra2 SCSI controller.

Tom:

Couple of comments. Shane Forbes always use to say that these things were product cycle driven. Given the fact that CDMA, DVD, digital cameras, PS2, SOC hard drive and everything else appears to be very early in their distribution to market, it is difficult for me to think this cycle is already more than half way through.

Second, overcapacity will probably be the real killer. It always has been. Patrick can speak to this better than me though.

One more thought. With Asia just starting to come back and Europe doing well, how can the end be near?

Competition encroaching oN LSI, in some markets, LSI encroaching on the competition ..... When the markets get big, that's bound to happen. Very hard to find another Intel.

The biggest thing I got from that article is that it's not easy to do system-on-a-chip. A few painful exmaples are CDMA and NSM/Cyrix.

I find solance in LSI's clear directions/focus and now, the beginning of the successful execution of the strategy. They used the last downturn to position the company/products/manufacturing for the upturn and all that work are about to bear fruit. To me, a lot of these SOC stuff really can't be done until you get to 0.18um. You get a taste at 0.25um, but really needs 0.18um to get real mass market product. Digital cameras, drive-on-a-chip, CDMA etc etc.

Another big plus for LSI is their ability to combine analog and digital. That put a big barrier for new entries. The drive-on-a-chip is just another example of this ability.
