Some Zionists supported the goal of a greater Israel, but it is not a formal goal, and many Zionist factions repudiated it long ago. And it is strange to blame Zionism for the depredations of Arab dictators upon their own people. I cannot even fathom the reasoning that would make Menachim Begin responsible for Saddam Hussein....There are many things that occurred under a Cold War rationale that are defensible, whether or not a mistake, if you accept that rationale, but not so if you do not. It is like our support of the Soviet Union during World War Two: strategy makes for strange bedfellows. Iran and Saudi Arabia fall into the category of things that we did for overarching strategic reasons. We continue to support the Saudis, because stability in the region remains important to us...As I said, I doubt that we can resolve this, but thanks for keeping it "clean"....
