Despite Tobacco Suit Clinton Can't Kick Cigar Habit

2.01 p.m. ET (1806 GMT) September 22, 1999

WASHINGTON — As the U.S. Justice Department launched a landmark lawsuit against the tobacco industry, the White House sheepishly admitted Wednesday that President Clinton has not kicked his cigar habit.

"I think the president believes that it's a bad habit but it's a habit he hasn't broken,'' White House spokesman Joe Lockhart told reporters when asked whether Clinton's cigar-smoking sent a mixed message to American children.

The president likes to chomp on an unlit cigar and from time to time lights up in private. Last month a photographer's long lens caught him on a Martha's Vineyard golf course with a cigar in his mouth and about half an inch of ash on its end.

The Justice Department sued the tobacco industry Wednesday to recover much of the $20 billion that the federal government spends every year on smoking-related health costs.

Jerusalem is a special case, nor is it necessarily hostile. Israeli expansion has always been a result of defensive measures, and Israel could have, but did not, annex the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, nor did it drive out the inhabitants. And the terrorism of the Irgun was directed toward military targets representing British interests in the area, as retaliation for British restrictions on emigration during World War II, it was nothing like the horrors perpetrated by the PLO and others...I will see what I can dig up on the "Greater Israel" question....

The Racist Nature of Zionism and Israel

"We declare openly that the Arabs have no right to settle on even
one centimeter of Eretz Israel.... Force is all they do or ever will
understand. We shall use the ultimate force until the Palestinians
come crawling to us on all fours ... When we have settled the
land, all the Arabs will be able to do will be to scurry around like
drugged roaches in a bottle."
