Jim,
Good post on 3G CDMA ITU & IMT-2000.

UNIVERSAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS CONSORTIUM JOINS THIRD GENERATION PARTNERSHIP PROJECT
September 22, 1999 - GENEVA, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)
During an official signing ceremony involving Leo Nikkari, vice president, strategy and industry relations for the UWCC, and the 3GPP partners attending the ITU-R meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, the 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) organization announced the acceptance of the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC) as a new Market Representation Partner (MRP) into the 3GPP.
The 3GPP organization was established for the preparation and maintenance of a complete set of globally applicable technical specifications for a Third Generation mobile system based on the evolved GSM core networks and the radio access technologies supported by 3GPP partners. These partners include ARIB (Japan), TTC (Japan), TTA (Korea), T1 (U.S.), ETSI (Europe) and CWTS (China) as Standards Development Organizations (SDO) as well as the following MRPs: GSMA, UMTS Forum, GSA and UWCC.
After signing the official acceptance papers in Geneva, Switzerland, Nikkari stated: "The UWCC is pleased to join the 3GPP as the newest MRP member. This represents a significant expansion to the current collaborative programs UWCC has been coordinating with the GSM community and ETSI, and we look forward to expanding this effort with the other 3GPP partners to complete all of the IMT-2000 Family of Standard requirements for 3G based on the evolution of ANSI-136 and GSM systems globally."
Sheila Mickool, president of UWCC, stated, "This was the right time for UWCC to step up from our previous level of engagement on 3G standards development. This continues the progress of the UWCC market model of working together with other organizations for the benefit of the wireless marketplace. " Greg Williams, chairman of the UWCC and vice president, wireless systems, SBC Communications, Inc., added: "We are very excited to share, with the full 3GPP community, our technical work on convergence of TDMA and GSM systems to achieve a common global solution for next generation high speed packet data with EDGE/EDGECOMPACT/GPRS, while enhancing the current level of inter-system roaming between TDMA and GSM networks. The UWCC will be an active contributor to developing a common global vision for full wireless Internet capability based on evolution of ANSI-41 and GSM MAP Core Networks."
The UWCC is a Bellevue, Wash.-based international consortium of more than 100 wireless carriers and vendors supporting the TDMA, EDGE and WIN technology standards. Its board members include Alcatel USA, Argentina TDMA Association, AT&T Wireless Services (USA), BellSouth Cellular Corp. (USA), Cable and Wireless (United Kingdom), Cellcom (Israel), Celumovil (Colombia), Compaq Computer Corporation, Ericsson Radio Systems, Hughes Network Systems, Industar Digital PCS (USA), Lucent Technologies, Miniphone (Argentina), Mobikom SDN BHD (Malaysia), Motorola, Movilnet (Venezuela), Nokia, Nortel Networks, Rogers Cantel (Canada), SBC Wireless (USA), Telecom Personal (Argentina), Unifon (Argentina) and VimpelCom (Russia).
