(BSNS WIRE) TSMC Begins Detailed Quake Assessment and Initial Recovery O TSMC Begins Detailed Quake Assessment and Initial Recovery Operations Business Editors SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSE) said at 11 a.m. PDT, that the company has secured partial electrical power and is beginning detailed assessment and recovery operations. The restoration of 10- to 20 percent of normal power has allowed the company to begin assessing losses of wafers in process, and to begin equipment recovery. TSMC is working with suppliers and vendors to ensure its supply of replacement parts for this equipment. Significant additional electrical power may be delivered when two nuclear power plants on the north end of the island are cleared to restart, perhaps as early as today. Company officials, including Chairman Morris Chang and President F.C. Tseng, are working directly with government officials and other Hsin-Chu Science Park companies on a priority plan for distribution of this additional power. Once full power has been restored to the facilities, recovery operation will begin in earnest. This includes: -- Gas line and water line checks -- Equipment repair and recalibration -- Production wafer starts The company believes it will not have to wait for repair and recalibration to be completed before starting operations. A very preliminary estimate indicates that it will take approximately one week after power is fully restored to achieve a reasonable level of production. An emergency Customer Response Task Force has been dedicated to the job of analyzing current work-in-progress (WIP) and account managers will update TSMC customers on the status of their individual lots on at least a daily basis. On a related front, TSMC and its employees have contributed some $8.25 million(US) to earthquake relief efforts, 25 percent of which was designated as employee donations. The funds have been directed to the Red Cross society of the Republic of China, to alleviate victims' losses caused by this disastrous quake. Marc. By the way the ticker is TSM not TSE
