Texas Instruments Launches First Business-to-Business TV Ad Campaign; Campaign Reflects TI Strategic Refocus on DSP and Analog Leadership

DALLAS, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) is taking its business-to-business message to the airwaves for the first time to communicate its leadership role in the digital world to decision makers in US and Europe. The campaign, which supports the core technology behind TI's strategic refocus -- digital signal processing (DSP) -- utilizes television, print and Internet advertising. Reflecting the significant shift in business strategy, the campaign's advertising strategy expands its focus from traditional trade and business publications towards news, entertainment and sports media -- doubling TI's annual advertising investment.

``With the proliferation of cable and Internet programs, we are now able to expand and better target the decision makers of our customers,' said Jean Wilkinson, vice president and manager worldwide communications. ``We have a strong story to tell to specific audiences, and we can reach these audiences through very targeted media. This is not an image campaign, this is an investment in winning more customers,' said Wilkinson.

As a result of research to determine which media would best reach target audiences, the ads will run in a spectrum of sports, entertainment and news media ranging from the Sci-Fi Channel to espn.com to Wall Street Journal. The highly focused mix of cable TV, Internet and print allows for specific targeting of audiences. TI's target audiences include design engineers, senior business managers, and software developers for DSP and analog designs.

DSP chips are ultrafast semiconductors that manipulate sounds, images and other data ten times faster than the most powerful microprocessors; essentially DSP and analog are the brains, eyes and ears powering dozens of communications and digital devices. This includes two thirds of the world's digital cell phones, a third of all modems, most high performance disk drives, as well as CD players, film projectors, laser printers, devices that convert music, pictures and video into Internet transmittable signals -- and countless other applications under development.

Over the last three years, through an aggressive strategy that has included 14 divestitures and 15 acquisitions, TI has repositioned itself on its leadership areas of DSP and analog. ``This campaign is a natural next step for TI to take in furthering our leadership position and continuing to grow our customer base,' said Tom Engibous, TI chairman, president and CEO.

Created by McCann-Erickson, the campaign features TI's technology through various digital applications -- both widespread and emerging -- including a video conferencing cellular phone; a music player that downloads music from the Internet; the convergence of voice, video and data; and digital cameras.

``This campaign highlights the collaborative role TI plays in the world of digital products and reinforces how TI programmable DSP's simplify the upgrade process,' said Tony Pace, executive vice president and general manager of McCann Southwest.

The campaign will begin in early October. It will run throughout the U.S. and in Europe and continue into the year 2000.
