Update: TSMC will need a week to resume operations once power is restored

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC), Taiwan's largest foundry, said wafer production will resume one week after power is restored.

TSMC and other industrial complexes, which have been without electricity since Tuesday's massive quake rocked the island, could see power turned back on as early as Friday, according to Taiwan Power Co., Taiwan's government-owned electric utility.

In the meantime, TSMC formed a special customer task force to keep its customers apprised at least daily on the status of their wafer lots.

A spokesman for TSMC USA in San Jose said the company is working with government officials in Taiwan to distribute power once two nuclear power plants on the island are restarted Thursday. In a statement issued today, the company said it had partially restored power to about 10% to 20% of normal operational levels.

The spokesman was unable to estimate when TSMC's power would be finally and fully restored, but he said the minimal power levels have allowed the foundry to begin making preliminary assessments of damage and in-process wafer loss.

TSMC as yet has not revised its prediction that September production levels would decrease about 10% as a result of the quake.
