Leads Launch of WebSmart Kids Program for Parents Organizations Team-up to Create Web Site to Teach Families Media Literacy Skills for the Internet DENVER, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- High Speed Access Corp., (Nasdaq: HSAC - news), Cable in the Classroom and five other organizations have teamed-up to create WebSmart Kids, an educational initiative designed to help parents make going online a safe, enjoyable and educational experience for their children.
Other supporters of this project include the LMC Community Foundation, the Jefferson Foundation, Tigh Tech Publishing and Design Group and Communigraphics Corporation, all of Colorado and E-WRITE of Maryland.
The WebSmart Kids program consists of two components -- an informational brochure and a web site both targeted at parents. Each piece focuses on teaching media literacy skills to help kids judge the value and the truth of the Internet messages they receive and to foster a safe, positive Internet environment.
The brochure directs parents to the WebSmart Kids web site, and will first be distributed to the parents of more than 250,000 students in five of the largest Denver Metro school districts. The brochure will also be made available nationally through Cable in the Classroom and cable operators for use in their local schools and communities.
The web site (www.websmartkids.org) includes an interactive questionnaire that lets parents gauge their knowledge of the Internet, media literacy and Internet safety. It also teaches parents about media literacy and how to apply media literacy skills to the Internet. This includes giving parents and their kids a hands-on experience in learning about the Internet and the many messages it sends through activities they can do online together.
''HSA Corp. is committed to, and believes in, Internet education for parents,'' said Ron Pitcock, President of High Speed Access Corp. ''Partnering with Cable in the Classroom, an organization dedicated to promoting effective use of the cable industry's educational resources, enables us to focus on Internet media literacy, an important effort during this wave of technological change.''
''Cable in the Classroom member networks and cable companies want students to be critical consumers of television and online content. We are happy to join the WebSmart Kids partners in providing parents and teachers with tools for effective use of the Internet's rich educational resources,'' said Megan Hookey, Managing Director of Cable in the Classroom. ''The first step is to share web time with our children. Then together develop media literacy skills,'' said Hookey.
The partners, several of whom are Colorado-based organizations, initiated this effort in memory of and tribute to the courageous students and teachers of Columbine High School.
''The Columbine tragedy touched us deeply. We wanted to do something lasting that could make a difference to a wide-spread group of children and families,'' said Kent Oyler, Chief Strategy Officer for HSAC. ''Our goal is to encourage parents to take an active role in their child's Internet involvement and help them foster a safe and positive Internet environment.''
